FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team wrapped up regular season play against Frostburg State University. The Falcons swept the Bobcats, 5-4 and 7-3.
Game 1: Fairmont State 5, Frostburg State 4 (8 Inn.)
In the first game, Frostburg State took the early lead in the opening frame as it scored two runs on back-to-back singles. Fairmont State trailed by two runs until the bottom of the third when
Quintin Smith singled up the middle to drive in
Maddox Johnston.
The Falcons took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Johnston hit a two-run homer over the left field wall. Unfortunately, the Bobcats answered in the top of the fifth with a solo shot to right field.
Both teams remained tied at three as the game ventured to extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Frostburg State captured the lead with an RBI single to left field.
Fairmont State looked to answer in its half of the eighth. With two outs,
Zach Brennan hit a triple down the right field line to bring home
Connor Bailey to even the score.
Kris Sutton then stepped to the plate and delivered a single up the middle for the walk-off win.
Brennan, Johnston and Sutton each finished with two hits for the game.Â
Game 2: Fairmont State 7, Frostburg State 3
Just like the first game, the Bobcats captured the first lead with an RBI double in the second. The Falcons evened the score in the bottom half as
Noah Canterbury scored on an error.
An inning later, Canterbury gave Fairmont State the lead with an RBI single to right as Smith scored. The home squad add to their lead in the fourth when Johnston hit his second homer of the day before
Cameron Moore drove a ball up the middle as
Tyler Haskins crossed home.Â
Frostburg State trimmed the difference to two (4-2) as a run scored on an error in the fifth. However, the Falcons responded in the bottom half as Brennan scored on a wild pitch before Haskins doubled to right to drive in Sutton. After a stolen base,
Ryan Goff doubled down the left field line to score Haskins to make it a 7-2 game.Â
The Bobcats scored once more in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to right. From there,
Luke Emory allowed just two more hits over the final 1.2 innings to secure the home win.
Dylan Travinski picked up the win going 4.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and four strikeouts. Emory picked up the save in his 2.1 innings of relief.
Fairmont State (24-24) will face the University of Charleston in the first game of the Mountain East Conference Tournament on Wednesday, May 7. Start time from GoMart Ballpark in Charleston is to be announced.
