Fairmont State Falls to Charleston in MEC Opener

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team faced the University of Charleston to open the Mountain East Conference tournament. The Falcons fell to the Golden Eagles, 9-3.

In the first inning, Fairmont State was able to get runners on base with a single by Quintin Smith followed by a Cameron Moore walk. With only one out, the Falcons looked to score first but were unable to drive in a run.

As the game ventured to the second, Charleston was able to strike first when a single to center field brought home two runs. Following back-to-back outs, the Golden Eagles scored two more runs on a single to the outfield to grasp a 4-0 advantage.

Charleston added to its lead in the third when a run came in on an error. The next pitch was wild and allowed another run to cross the plate. UC now led 6-0 going to the fourth.

The Golden Eagles tacked on an additional run in the fourth. In the top of the fifth, Fairmont State worked the bases loaded as Moore drew a walk to bring home Connor Bailey. Unfortunately, Charleston responded with a solo shot to right center. Going to the sixth, the Golden Eagles led 8-1.

In the sixth, the Falcons once again worked the bases loaded with no outs. Bailey then drove a ball through the right side to plate Quintin Reep. However, the team was unsuccessful in producing another run as they trailed by six (8-2).

After a scoreless top of the seventh, the Golden Eagles scored one more run on a ground ball. The game moved to the ninth inning, Fairmont State was able to work the bases loaded once more. Bailey was able to work the count and drew a walk to make it 9-3. Unfortunately, that was the final run scored as FSU fell by the six-run difference.

Fairmont State (24-25) will face Concord University on Thursday, May 8 in an elimination game. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m.
