CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team dueled with the University of Charleston in the Mountain East Conference Tournament. The Falcons eliminated the Golden Eagles, 4-1.
Neither team was able to get on the board in the first inning. In the second, Charleston loaded the bases with two outs but a ground ball to first ended the threat.
Fairmont State let the big out fuel them going to the bottom half. The team was able to get two runners on before
Tyler Haskins blasted a three-run homer over the right field wall to take a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth, the Golden Eagles got on the board with a RBI double to center. They then loaded the bases but a chopper right in front of home ended the inning.Â
As the game progressed, UC had runners on the corners with no outs with
Mac Schnur taking the mound. He struck out the next two batters before a ground ball drew an end to the frame with the Falcons leading by two (3-1).
Fairmont State was able to add an insurance run in the eighth when
Zach Brennan hit a sacrifice fly left field as
Quintin Smith scored. In the ninth, the Golden Eagles hit two-straight fly balls to center. Following a single, Schnur struck out the final batter for the win.
Connor Tingler picked up the win with four innings pitched and allowed just one-run on four hits with four strikeouts. Schnur earned his third save of the season with three scoreless innings.
Fairmont State (26-25) awaits to see who it will face on Saturday, May 10. First pitch from GoMart Ballpark is set for 4:30 p.m.
