FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State University secured a 3-1 victory over Clarion University on Wednesday at Duvall-Rosier Field. Fairmont State dominated the first half, scoring all three goals, including the game-winner, while outshooting the Golden Eagles 9-3.
The first half opened with an assertive performance from Fairmont State, highlighted by
Arrington Sparks' goal in the 18th minute, setting the tone for the home team.
Montserrat Diaz doubled the lead with a goal in the 22nd minute, assisted by
Ava Yannucci, showcasing the team's effective teamwork.
Serenity Thomas capped the half with a goal in the 33rd minute, giving the Falcons a commanding 3-0 advantage, while goalkeeper
Olivia Johnston maintained a clean sheet with key saves.
The second half began with Fairmont State exerting pressure through a series of corner kicks, starting at the 45th minute and continuing with five consecutive opportunities by the 58th minute. Despite these efforts, the Golden Eagles managed to find the back of the net in the 80th minute with a goal by Mia Valerio, assisted by Hailey Dobb, cutting Fairmont State's lead to 3-1. The Falcons responded with a flurry of shots from
Dayra Dinarte and
Valentina Gianinetto, but Clarion's goalkeeper, Sage Sherk, stood firm, making key saves to prevent any further scoring changes in the half.
Serenity Thomas scored a goal on two shots, both of which were on target. Sparks added a goal from her single shot, contributing to the team's offense. Yannucci recorded an assist, adding a crucial setup to the scoring. Diaz scored the game-winning goal, securing the team's victory. Johnston tallied two saves during her 77:37 minutes in goal, maintaining a clean sheet.
Fairmont State (1-0) will open the Mountain East Conference play on Sunday, September 14 against West Liberty University. First kick from Duvall-Rosier Field is set for 1:00 p.m.
