Diaz’s Late Goal Secures Falcons’ 1-0 Win Over Frostburg State

First Regular-Season Win Over the Bobcats Since 2019

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State defeated Frostburg St. 1-0 on Wednesday at Duvall-Rosier Field. The decisive goal came in the second half, ensuring a clean sheet for Fairmont State The home team dominated with 20 shots, nine on goal, while their defense limited Frostburg State to just one shot on target.

The win for the Falcons was their first over the Bobcats since the MEC Championship game on November 6, 2022. This is the first regular-season win since November 9, 2019, when Fairmont State was victorious by the score of 1-0.

The first half featured a strong defensive performance, as Fairmont State kept the game scoreless through 45 minutes. The Falcons applied pressure early with shots from Emelly Chicas and Braylyn Sparks, both saved by the Bobcats' goalkeeper Mia Graff, at 8:48 and 9:21, respectively. Despite several attempts, the Falcons were unable to find the net, while Olivia Johnston held steady in goal, helping to maintain a 0-0 scoreline at the break.

The second half commenced with the Falcons striving to capitalize on their opportunities, as Sam Yuen and Arrington Sparks both tested the Bobcats' goalkeeper, Mia Graff, with early shots. The persistence paid off when Montserrat Diaz found the back of the net in the 74th minute, giving the Falcons a crucial lead. Despite a series of attempts by the Bobcats, including a corner kick flurry in the final minutes, the Falcons held firm to secure a 1-0 victory. 

Diaz scored the only goal for the Falcons, securing the game-winning goal with her two shots on target. Sparks contributed offensively with two shots on goal out of three attempts. Yuen matched Sparks with two shots on goal from three shots overall. Johnston played a crucial role in defense, recording one save and maintaining a shutout through 90 minutes.

Fairmont State (3-0, 2-0) travels to Bridgeport, West Virginia to take on Salem University. First kick from The Bridge Sports Complex is set for 3:30 p.m.
