FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State secured a 2-1 victory over Point Park in a league match on Wednesday at Duvall-Rosier Field. The Falcons netted the opening goal in the first half, maintaining pressure with 12 total shots compared to the Pioneers' three. Despite Point Park's second-half effort to equalize, the Falcons' defense held firm, with their goalkeeper making a crucial save to preserve the win.
The first half began with Fairmont State setting the tone as the offense steadily built momentum. The pressure paid off with a significant breakthrough in the 37th minute when
Montserrat Diaz scored, assisted by
Dayra Dinarte, putting the Falcons ahead 1-0.
The Falcons continued to press forward, maintaining offensive pressure with multiple shot attempts and corner kicks in the closing minutes. The half concluded with the Falcons holding a 1-0 lead, carrying their advantage into the break.
Fairmont State began the second half by extending their lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute. Diaz found the back of the net, assisted by Dinarte and
Ava Yannucci. The team's offensive pressure continued with
Braylyn Sparks and
Lyndy Van Horn creating additional scoring opportunities.
Despite the Falcons' defensive efforts, the Pioneers managed to reduce the deficit late in the match. Sterre Kuijper scored in the 89th minute to bring the score to 2-1. The Falcons maintained their advantage through the final whistle, securing a 2-1 victory.
Diaz scored two goals, including the game-winner, from three shots. Yannucci contributed an assist while also taking one shot. Dinarte provided two assists, aiding in the team's offensive efforts. Johnston, in goal, made one save while facing three shots, helping secure the win.
