Late Gianinetto Goal Lifts Fairmont State to 1-1 Draw at Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. — Fairmont State and Wheeling played to a 1-1 draw on Sunday at Bishop Schmitt Field. The Falcons dominated the offensive end with 37 shots, including 10 on goal, while the Cardinals managed just one shot. Despite the overwhelming pressure, Wheeling's goalkeeper made nine crucial saves to preserve the tie. Fairmont State scored their equalizer in the second half after falling behind early.

The first half commenced with Fairmont State actively pressing the attack, as Montserrat Diaz and Arrington Sparks both tested the Cardinals' defense early on with several shots. Despite these efforts, the Falcons were unable to convert, with Wheeling's goalkeeper Akyla Walcott making crucial saves.

Wheeling capitalized on a scoring opportunity in the 13th minute, with Graceylyn Hanna finding the back of the net, assisted by Gabriella Bortolussi. The Falcons continued to create chances, as Sam Yuen and Valentina Gianinetto added to the shot count, though Walcott continued to deny them. The half closed with Fairmont State trailing, having generated multiple attempts but still behind 1-0.

The second half began with the Falcons pressing forward aggressively, creating multiple scoring opportunities. Agnes Maerta Bjoerk and Lyndy Van Horn each had shots early, though both were off target. A persistent offensive effort led to several more attempts from Fairmont State, with Diaz and Yuen challenging Wheeling's defense, but Walcott managed crucial saves to keep the score level.

As the clock ticked down, the Falcons continued to test the Cardinals' resolve. In the 89th minute, Gianinetto broke through, scoring a critical goal with an assist from Payton Parliament. This late strike brought Fairmont State level with Wheeling, closing the half with a 1-1 tie.

Gianinetto scored one goal and took six shots, including two on target for the Falcons. Yuen contributed five shots, with two being on goal. Parliament registered one assist and attempted two shots. Diaz actively participated in the offensive efforts with six shots, three of which were on goal.

Fairmont State (5-0-1, 3-0-1) remains on the road as it will face Concord University on Wednesday, October 1. First kick is slated for 7:00 p.m.
