Strong Second Half Powers Men's Basketball Past Davis & Elkins

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State (14-3, 8-2 MEC) defeated Davis & Elkins (6-11, 3-7 MEC) 90-72 at Joe Retton Arena on Wednesday night. The Fairmont State basketball team pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Senators 46-33, led by a strong inside presence that resulted in 42 points in the paint.

Fairmont State opened with a strong offensive presence, leveraging quick ball movement to jump out to an early lead. Miguel Martinez and David Jolinder connected on multiple three-pointers, and Rene Diop dominated the paint with layups and dunks. This early surge put Fairmont State in control, allowing them to maintain the lead throughout the first half.

As the half progressed, Fairmont State's defense forced several turnovers, converting them into points. Drey Carter and Tyheil Peterson facilitated the transition game, enabling quick scores and extending the lead. Despite a late rally from the Senators, Fairmont State held steady, closing the half with a 44–39 advantage.

Fairmont State initiated the second half with a decisive scoring drive, capitalizing on offensive rebounds and effective shooting. Tyheil Peterson's three-pointer at 16:41, assisted by Martinez, contributed to a 10–2 run that established a 10-point advantage. The Falcons continued to control the pace, with Carter's consistent scoring extending their lead.

Despite the Senators' attempts to close the gap, including a successful three-pointer by Nnadozie Okoroji, Fairmont State maintained their momentum. Jolinder's steal at 9:35 and subsequent fast-break points further reinforced their lead.

As the half concluded, Fairmont State sustained their offensive pressure with Martinez and Peterson executing crucial plays. The game ended with the Falcons leading 90–72, securing a 46–33 advantage in the second half.

Martinez led with 22 points, converting 4 of 11 from beyond the arc and pulling down 10 rebounds. Carter contributed 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting and added eight rebounds. Jolinder scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers, and registered three steals. Zycheus Dobbs collected two steals while adding eight points.

Fairmont State ventures to Frostburg, Maryland on Saturday, January 24 to face the Bobcats of Frostburg State University. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
