Fairmont State Falls Short to #7 West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — #8 Fairmont State University (20-4, 14-3 MEC) fell to #7 West Liberty University (21-3, 16-1 MEC) 96-91 in a tense matchup at ASRC on Saturday. The game featured 14 ties and 12 lead changes, with Fairmont State scoring 48 points in the paint.

The opening half saw Fairmont State. and West Liberty in a tight contest, marked by eight ties and a back-and-forth lead change. Fairmont State capitalized early with a strong performance in the paint, scoring 16 points inside, while also converting four fast-break opportunities. Key contributions from the bench, which added 16 points, helped maintain the competitive edge.

West Liberty slightly edged Fairmont State in overall shooting, but the Falcons' defensive efforts were highlighted by four steals and a block, keeping pressure on the home team. As the half closed, Fairmont State hit a late 3-pointer from CJ Meredith to close the gap, ending the first half trailing 35-32.

The second half commenced with Fairmont State narrowing the gap as Drey Carter hit a jumper and assisted David Jolinder for a 3-pointer, leveling the score at 37. The momentum shifted back and forth, with the Falcons taking a brief lead following a layup by Carter and a 3-pointer by Tyheil Peterson. However, the Hilltoppers responded quickly, reclaiming the lead with a 3-pointer by Myles Montgomery.

The Falcons managed to keep the game close as Rene Diop completed a three-point play, while Miguel Martinez tied the score at 48 with a 3-pointer. Despite another lead change, Fairmont State maintained pressure with baskets from Zycheus Dobbs and Carter, who scored in the paint.

As the half progressed, Fairmont State trailed after a scoring run by West Liberty. The Falcons' efforts to close the gap continued with a late 3-pointer from Jolinder and a layup by Peterson, but the Hilltoppers' free throws and a late layup solidified their lead. The game concluded with Fairmont State trailing 96-91.

Dobbs scored 16 points and collected five rebounds. Carter posted 15 points and secured seven rebounds. Jolinder added 13 points, including three 3-pointers.
