INSTITUTE, W.Va. — Fairmont State University (17-3, 11-2 MEC) secured a commanding 121-74 victory over West Virginia State University (5-17, 2-13 MEC) at Walker Convocation Center on Saturday. The Falcons dominated with a strong offensive performance, shooting 47-for-74 from the field, including 20 three-pointers.
Fairmont State established early control, responding to an initial Yellow Jackets score by tying the game with a jumper from
Tyheil Peterson. A sequence of scoring drives, including a three-pointer from
CJ Meredith and a layup by
Drey Carter, allowed Fairmont State to build momentum. The team capitalized on turnovers and defensive rebounds, assisting 17 times and scoring 22 points in the paint.
As the half progressed, the Falcons extended their lead with effective three-point shooting, highlighted by
Miguel Martinez's three-pointer at 5:52. Fairmont State's bench contributed significantly, adding 27 points, while holding the Yellow Jackets to 32 points. The first half ended with Fairmont State leading 62-32.
The Falcons capitalized on an early momentum shift in the second half, beginning with Carter's layup at 19:15. This initiated a series of unanswered baskets, including a three-pointer by Martinez and a dunk by
David Jolinder. By the 17:18 mark, Fairmont State had pushed their lead with a 9-point run, bringing the score to 73-34.
The visitors maintained their offensive pressure, as Peterson connected on back-to-back three-pointers, extending the advantage to 91-46 with 11:34 remaining. Fairmont State's defense also made timely stops, highlighted by Peterson's steal at 12:49, which led to a fast-break layup by Martinez.
Closing the half, the Falcons continued to widen the gap, with
Anthony Spatafore scoring a layup at 1:14 to secure a commanding 121-74 lead. Fairmont State outscored the Yellow Jackets 59-42 in the half, showcasing their offensive efficiency and defensive resilience.
Carter scored 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting and collected nine rebounds. Peterson added 17 points, hitting five of six from beyond the arc, and recorded two steals. Martinez gathered 12 rebounds and added 11 points, converting three 3-pointers.
Rene Diop recorded three blocks and scored 13 points while shooting 6-of-8 from the field.
Fairmont State remains on the road on Monday, February 9 to battle Concord University in a make-up game from January 28. Start time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
