ATHENS, W.Va. — Fairmont State University (19-3, 13-2 MEC) secured an 80-73 victory over Concord University (11-11, 7-7 MEC) at the Carter Center on Monday night. The Falcons led by seven at halftime and capitalized on Concord's 14 turnovers, scoring 22 points off those mistakes to seal the win.
Fairmont State opened the first half with a strong offensive push, capitalizing on points in the paint and turnovers.
Drey Carter initiated scoring with a layup, and
Rene Diop contributed with multiple blocks and baskets.
Tyheil Peterson and
CJ Meredith extended the lead, while
David Jolinder added to the momentum with a dunk and a three-pointer, providing a significant advantage.
Concord responded with outside shooting, but Fairmont State maintained control through effective defensive rebounds and key assists from Carter. Despite Concord's attempts to narrow the gap with a few successful three-pointers, Fairmont State closed the half leading 35-28.
The second half commenced with the Falcons establishing momentum through a series of successful layups, including a key fast-break layup by Jolinder at 15:47, extending their lead to 43–37. The visitors capitalized on defensive plays, with Diop recording a block and a defensive rebound.
As the half progressed, the Falcons maintained their advantage by converting free throws effectively. Carter's dunk at 9:22 and Meredith's 3-pointer at 2:03 further solidified their position. The half concluded with the Falcons claiming the victory, 80–73
Carter scored 15 points and collected 11 rebounds. Jolinder recorded 14 points and two steals. Peterson added 11 points, converting 9 of 13 free throws. Diop posted 16 points and blocked six shots.
