Falcons Roll Past Bloomsburg

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's tennis team faced Bloomsburg University in its home opener of the spring season. The Falcons rolled past the Huskies, 5-0.

The Falcons set the tone early in doubles play. At No. 1 doubles, Hope Backx and Lara Smith earned a 6-3 win over Dasha Nakonechna and Lia-Sophie Seele. Maria Fonseca and Stephanie Gopar followed with another 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles against Jen McDonald and Nicole Ilkovic. Fairmont State completed the doubles sweep at No. 3 as Alara Akgul and Laura Maciel defeated Lily Sierka and Macarena Arisio, 6-2, giving the Falcons an early 1-0 advantage.
 
Fairmont State carried that momentum into singles competition with several decisive victories. At No. 1 singles, Fonseca topped Ilkovic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Stephanie Gopar also cruised to a win at No. 4 singles, defeating Nakonechna 6-1, 6-2.
 
The Falcons were particularly dominant in the lower half of the lineup. Maciel delivered a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory over Sierka at No. 5 singles, while Akgul added another point with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Sarah Buck at No. 6.
 
Two additional singles matches were left unfinished when the match was clinched. Backx led Seele 6-2, 5-3 at No. 2 singles, while Smith was tied with McDonald 4-6, 3-2 at No. 3.

Fairmont State (5-3) continues non-conference play on Friday, March 20 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Start time is set for 4:00 p.m.
