MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Fairmont State University (10-6, 2-0) had a successful doubleheader against Davis & Elkins College (4-20, 0-2), winning the first game 12-4 and narrowly edging the second game 5-4 on Friday.
In the first game, the Falcons secured a commanding victory with a strong offensive start, scoring four runs in the first inning.
Emma Paul delivered a three-run homer, bringing in
Bella Hess and
Gabby Bibb, who reached on an error and a walk, respectively.
Avery Townsend later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Alexa Foresha, giving Fairmont State a 4-1 lead after Davis & Elkins managed to score in the bottom half of the inning.
The Falcons extended their lead in the second inning with a double from Paul, driving in two runs, while
Gabby Bibb scored on an error, pushing the advantage to 7-1.
The Senators responded with three runs to make it 7-4, but Fairmont State added three more runs in the third inning, with Hess scoring on an error, followed by an RBI groundout from Bibb and an RBI single by Paul, increasing the lead to 10-4.
In the fourth inning,
Breonna Marietta scored on a double by
Paige Matteson, making it 11-4, and the final run came in the sixth inning as
Gabi Ramm, pinch running for Foresha, crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Matteson, concluding the game at 12-4.
Micah Wilson started for the Falcons, pitching 1 2/3 innings and giving up four earned runs on five hits, with one strikeout and three walks.
Caitlin Morey delivered a strong performance in relief, pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing only three hits while striking out three and walking one.
Emma Paul recorded four hits, including a home run, and drove in six runs.
Bella Hess scored two runs and stole two bases, while
Paige Matteson contributed with three hits, two runs, and two RBIs.
In the second game, Fairmont State claimed an early lead in the first inning as
Bella Hess reached first on an error and advanced to second.
Emma Paul then flied out to center field for a sacrifice fly, allowing Hess to score an unearned run, ending the inning with a 1-0 lead.
The Falcons capitalized on errors and timely hitting in the third inning, scoring four runs.
Paige Matteson reached first on an error and advanced to third with
Bella Hess's single.
Gabby Bibb also reached first on an error, allowing Matteson to score.
Avery Townsend followed with a single to center field, driving in Hess and Bibb, before scoring on another error, making it a four-run inning and giving Fairmont State a 5-1 lead.
Davis & Elkins responded in the fourth inning with two runs from an RBI double and a single, tightening the score to 5-3. In the sixth inning, they added another run with a single, making it 5-4. However, Fairmont State managed to hold off further scoring in the final inning, securing a narrow 5-4 victory.
Delaney Haller started for Fairmont State, pitching 3 1/3 innings while allowing five hits and three earned runs.
Phoebe Rusnak relieved Haller, delivering 3 2/3 innings of work, surrendering five hits and one earned run, striking out four batters without issuing any walks.
Bella Hess scored two runs and collected a hit, while
Avery Townsend added two RBIs and recorded a hit.
Paige Matteson doubled and scored a run while also drawing a walk.
Fairmont State is set to face West Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday, March 21 from Duvall-Rosier Field. First pitch is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
