FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The Fairmont StateUniversity softball team secured two victories over West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, winning 5–1 and 5–3 in a doubleheader.
Game 1: Fairmont State 5, West Virginia Wesleyan 1
In the first game, Fairmont State showcased a strong offensive performance, registering three doubles and a home run to contribute to its five runs. The scoring started in the top of the second inning when
Avery Townsend singled and advanced to third on the throw, setting the stage for
Breonna Marietta's two-run homer. The inning concluded with the Falcons leading 2–0.
In the fifth inning, Marietta doubled and was followed by
Paige Matteson's double. Matteson then scored on Abbie Keilhoz's groundout, extending the Falcons' lead to 3–0. The Bobcats responded in the bottom half with a run, bringing the score to 3–1.
In the seventh inning, the Falcons solidified their position as
Alexa Foresha singled and
Carly Crowder, running for Foresha, advanced to third on
Jaylin McGill's double. Matteson's groundout brought home two runs, sealing the win for the Falcons with a final score of 5–1.
Micah Wilson pitched a complete game for the Falcons, allowing just one earned run over 7 innings. Wilson faced 30 batters, giving up 7 hits while striking out 4 and walking only 1.
Breonna Marietta went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, while
Paige Matteson drove in two runs with a double and
Jaylin McGill added a double and scored a run.
Game 2: Fairmont State 5, West Virginia Wesleyan 3
In the second game, Fairmont State mounted a dramatic comeback, overcoming a 3–0 deficit to secure a 5–3 victory. West Virginia Wesleyan took an early lead in the first inning when Jaelyn Riley scored on a passed ball, making it 1–0.
The Bobcats added to their lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run from Reagan Winn, extending the score to 2–0. The sixth inning saw the Bobcats capitalize on a defensive error to score another run, bringing its lead to 3–0.
However, the Falcons rallied in the seventh inning.
Alexa Foresha led off with a double, and
Carly Crowder's single advanced pinch runner
Kensy Thomas to third.
Paige Matteson walked to load the bases, and Abbie Keilhoz reached on an error, allowing two runs to score.
Addison Nogay then delivered a clutch single, driving in two more runs to give the Falcons the lead.
Avery Townsend's sacrifice fly brought in another run, capping a five-run rally for Fairmont State. The Bobcats were unable to respond in the bottom of the seventh, sealing a 5–3 victory for the Falcons.
Phoebe Rusnak started the game for Fairmont State, pitching 3 1/3 innings while allowing two earned runs on three hits, including one home run. She recorded two strikeouts and one walk, throwing 51 pitches with 32 strikes.
Caitlin Morey relieved Rusnak, pitching 3 2/3 innings, conceding one earned run on three hits and striking out two. Nogay collected two RBIs with a pinch-hit single, while Keilhoz also contributed two RBIs, reaching base on an error with the bases loaded.
Fairmont State (12-6, 4-0) hosts Frostburg State University on Wednesday, March 25. Game one is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
