MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Fairmont State University (13-11, 7-5 MEC) and West Virginia Wesleyan College (7-22, 2-8 MEC) faced off in a doubleheader at Dale Miller Field on Sunday, resulting in a split decision. The Falcons fell to the Bobcats in the first game with a final score of 8–6, but bounced back to secure a decisive 6-1 victory in the second game.
Game 1: West Virginia Wesleyan 8, Fairmont State 6
In Game 1, the opening inning saw both teams deliver significant scoring. West Virginia Wesleyan jumped to an early lead with Josiah Segura's two-RBI double and an RBI single by Dylan Neach, contributing to a 4–0 lead.
Fairmont State responded effectively, with
Cameron Moore's RBI single starting a five-run rally. Key hits from
Maddox Johnston and
Brayden Hampton, along with a throwing error, helped the Falcons claim a 5–4 advantage after the first inning.
The third inning marked another pivotal moment as Carter Collins of the Bobcats hit a two-run home run, reclaiming the lead at 6–5. In the fifth inning, both teams added to their totals.
Coleman Cross secured an RBI single for WVWC, extending its lead. Fairmont State responded with Johnston's RBI single, narrowing the gap to 8–6. The score remained 8–6 at the conclusion of the fifth inning.
The final innings were quiet for both squads, as neither team managed to score. West Virginia Wesleyan maintained its lead, securing the victory.
Caden Goodwin started for the Falcons, pitching 3 1/3 innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits, including one home run. Goodwin struck out one batter and walked three.
Anthony Dixon relieved, contributing 2 2/3 innings while allowing one earned run and striking out three.
Braedon Leatherman closed the game, pitching one scoreless inning, striking out two, and not allowing any hits or walks.
Reilly Bubb finished with two hits, two runs, and a stolen base.
Bryont Green contributed with two hits and scored a run, adding a stolen base to his performance. Moore recorded two hits and drove in a run, while Johnston delivered with three RBIs and two hits.
Game 2: Fairmont State 6, West Virginia Wesleyan 1
In Game 2, the scoring began in the fourth inning when
Reilly Bubb singled through the left side, driving in
TJ Hughes for a 1-0 lead. After five innings, the Falcons extended their lead to 2-0 as
Cam Cole singled, stole second, and was driven home by
Bryont Green's single up the middle.
In the sixth inning, the Falcons broke the game open with a four-run frame. Bubb scored on a bases-loaded walk to
Connor Bailey. Cole then doubled to left center, bringing home two more runs. Green added a sacrifice fly to score Bailey, providing a 6-1 advantage through six innings.
The Bobcats managed a single unearned run in the sixth inning, but the Falcons held their lead through the seventh to close out the win.
Dylan Travinski delivered a strong performance on the mound, pitching 5 2/3 innings with 75 pitches thrown. He allowed just two hits and one unearned run, with only one walk and five strikeouts.
Cameron Gonzalez contributed 1 1/3 innings in relief, giving up one hit and recording three groundouts.
Cam Cole recorded three hits and drove in two runs, including a double with the bases loaded.
Bryont Green added two RBIs and four assists from shortstop.
Reilly Bubb contributed with two hits, one RBI, and a stolen base while also making four assists at second base.
Fairmont State returns to Dale Miller Field on Tuesday, March 31 against Slippery Rock University. The game is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
