Fairmont State’s Tim Koenig Steps Down as Head Men’s Basketball Coach

Fairmont, W.Va. – Fairmont State University announced today that Head Men's Basketball Coach Tim Koenig is stepping down as he will be named the Associate Head Men's Basketball Coach at Coastal Carolina University. Koenig has led the program since 2019, establishing himself as one of the most successful coaches in program history.

"Coach Koenig, or TK as fans fondly call him, has made an undeniable impact on the campus of Fairmont State and across the region," said University President Mike Davis. "His success recruiting talented basketball players and coaching championship teams speak for themselves. What set him apart, as a truly exceptional coach and Falcon, was his dedication to student-athletes off the court and the broader community. From insisting that players perform academically on par with their athletic accomplishments, to organizing and hosting youth clinics, TK has helped our students, University, and community reach new heights. We are thankful for his seven years of excellence and wish him and his family all the best. The Koenigs will always be Falcons!"

During his seven-season tenure, Koenig has compiled a record of 159-47 which puts him fourth all-time at Fairmont State in total wins and the second best all-time winning percentage at 77.1-percent. Under his leadership, the Falcons captured the Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship in 2021 and 2025, which were the first Conference Championships since 1984, along with six NCAA Tournament Appearances.

Koenig consistently had players earn individual honors, including All-MEC and All-Atlantic Region accolades. Off the court, the team's overall GPA was above 3.0 all seven years with various student-athletes receiving academic recognition whether it was from the conference or on the national level. Additionally, the team's Academic Success Rate (ASR) was consistently over 90-percent during Koenig's tenure.

"My family and I want to thank Fairmont State University, the administration, and the community for all of the love and support the past seven years," Tim Koenig said. "Fairmont State is a special place filled with friends that we will always have and cherish. To all the players and coaches over the past seven years that I had the honor to be with, THANK YOU! We accomplished some remarkable things on and off the court. I wish nothing but success to the men's basketball program, athletic department, and Fairmont State University. This community will always hold a special place in mine and my family's hearts. Go Falcons!"

Fairmont State University Director of Athletics Greg Bamberger praised Koenig's impact on the university and the basketball program:

"Tim Koenig has been an incredible member of our staff and leading our men's basketball program, and we are incredibly grateful for his commitment to our student-athletes, the program, and the Falcon community. His passion and work ethic have helped carry the tradition of Fairmont State basketball both regionally and nationally, and he will always remain a part of the Falcon family.
As we look ahead, we will immediately begin a national search for our next head coach and plan to move swiftly. We are confident the tradition of success that defines Fairmont State basketball will continue to grow in the years to come."

The university will launch a national search for its next head men's basketball coach. In the interim, Assistant Coaches Trent Howard and Donald Kummer will oversee day-to-day operations of the program.
