Falcons Claim Twinbill Over the Mountain Lions

ATHENS, W.Va. — Fairmont State (26-9, 14-3) completed a successful doubleheader against Concord (19-20, 9-12) with two decisive victories, winning 11-4 in the first game and 10-4 in the second at CU Softball Field.

Game 1: Fairmont State 11, Concord 4

In the first game, Fairmont State took an early lead when Avery Townsend scored on a single by Breonna Marietta. However, Concord responded with three runs in the bottom half to hold a 3-1 advantage. 

The Falcons fought back in the second inning, tying the game at 3-3 as Sydney Emanuel scored on a single by Bella Hess, who later crossed the plate on an Emma Paul single. 

After Concord reclaimed the lead in the fourth, the Falcons responded in the fifth when Emanuel's single to center field plated Jaylin McGill, tying the game at 4.

The seventh inning saw Fairmont State break the game open with a remarkable seven-run rally. Carly Crowder, running for Marietta, scored on a double by Alexa Foresha, followed by a crucial single from Hess that drove in two runs. Paul doubled to bring in two more runners, and Marietta capped the inning with a two-RBI double. 

Concord attempted to rally but left a runner stranded, resulting in the Falcons emerging victorious, 11-4.

Micah Wilson delivered an impressive performance in relief, pitching 6 1/3 innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out nine batters. 

Bella Hess scored two runs and collected three RBIs. Emma Paul finished with three hits and three RBIs, including a double, while Breonna Marietta contributed with two hits and three RBIs, adding a double to her performance.

Game 2: Fairmont State 10, Concord 4

In the second game, the scoring began with Bella Hess scoring on a sacrifice fly from Emma Paul, followed by Avery Townsend scoring on a groundout by Jaylin McGill, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning. 

The second inning saw a major offensive burst, as Townsend, Hess, and Abbie Keilhoz loaded the bases. Paul walked in a run, and Breonna Marietta hit a grand slam to extend the lead to 7-0 by the end of the inning.

The third inning saw Gabi Ramm, pinch-running for Alexa Foresha, score on a groundout by Allyson Nordling, adding another run for the Falcons, while Concord managed to score one run, bringing the score to 8-1. 

The sixth inning featured two more runs for Fairmont State as Bella Hess tripled and scored on a wild pitch, and Marietta drove in Townsend with a groundout. Concord added another run, ending the inning with the Falcons ahead 10-4. 

The Falcons maintained their lead through the seventh inning, sealing the game with a final score of 10-4.

Delaney Haller started on the mound for the Falcons, pitching 2 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run while giving up two hits and striking out two batters. Liz Alsop took over for 1 2/3 innings, yielding one earned run on two hits and securing a win to improve her season record to 3-0. Phoebe Rusnak closed out the game with 2 2/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit and striking out four.

Breonna Marietta led the offense with three hits, including a home run, driving in five runs. Avery Townsend added three hits and scored three runs, while Bella Hess also scored three runs and hit a triple. Emma Paul contributed two RBIs with a sacrifice fly and a walk.

Fairmont State remains on the road on Wednesday, April 22 to face Frostburg State University. Game one is set to start at 2:00 p.m.
