FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's tennis team faced West Virginia State University on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons swept the Yellow Jackets, 7-0.
The Falcons claimed two of the three doubles matches to build early momentum. After dropping a tight decision at No. 1 doubles,
Maria Fonseca and
Stephanie Gopar responded with a strong 6-3 win at No. 2.
Alara Akgul and
Laura Maciel followed with a commanding 6-1 victory at No. 3 to give Fairmont the doubles edge.
In singles, Fairmont State left no doubt, sweeping all six matches in emphatic fashion.
Fonseca set the tone at the top of the lineup with a composed 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1.
Hope Backx battled through a three-set thriller at No. 2, rallying after dropping the second set to win 6-3, 6-7, 7-5. Gopar continued the momentum with a straight-sets victory at No. 3, while
Lara Smith handled her opponent comfortably at No. 4, 6-1, 6-3.
The Falcons were especially dominant in the bottom half of the lineup. Maciel and Akgul each delivered flawless performances, earning matching 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 5 and No. 6 to cap off the sweep.
Fairmont State (9-5) hosts Salem University on Wednesday, April 8. Start time is set for 3:00 p.m.
