FAIRMONT, W.Va. — In the first time program history, the Fairmont State University men's tennis team hosted a portion of the NCAA Atlantic Regional. No. 2 seed Fairmont State opened the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional in dominant fashion Monday afternoon, sweeping No. 7 seed Bloomsburg University, 4-0, to advance in postseason play.
Fairmont State secured the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The tandem of
Gabriel Masu and Keagan Karunagaran rolled to a 6-1 win over Jack Seaborn and Alejandro Higuera, while
Mohamed El Helaly and
Gustavo Masu added a 6-3 victory against Landon Wall and Alejandro Higuera. The No. 1 doubles match featuring
Kusunoki Haruto and
Noah Liedtke was left unfinished with the Falcons leading 6-5.
In singles competition, Fairmont State quickly closed out the match with strong performances across the lineup.
Noah Liedtke earned a straight-set 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles, while
Mohamed El Helaly dominated at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
Gustavo Masu clinched the deciding point for the Falcons at No. 6 singles, defeating Landon Wall 6-3, 6-3.
Several other matches were nearing completion when play was halted following the Falcons' fourth point. Haruto had rallied after dropping the opening set at No. 1 singles,
Gabriel Masu was locked in a tight battle at No. 2, and Keagan Karunagaran was on the verge of victory at No. 3 singles.
Fairmont State will face Jefferson University for a chance to advance to the NCAA Championship finals on Tuesday, May 12. Match time from the Fairmont State University Tennis Courts is set for 12:00 p.m.
