Softball Wins MEC Tournament Opener

SALEM, Va. — Fairmont State (36-11) secured a commanding 10–2 victory over West Virginia State (24-27) on Sunday at Moyer Sports Complex. In a game highlighted by Fairmont State's five stolen bases and a home run, it tallied 10 hits to seal the win.

Following a scoreless first, Fairmont State broke the tie in the second inning. Bella Hess singled to left center, driving in two runs, while Emma Paul added two more with a single to left field. At the end of the second inning, Fairmont State led 4–0.

In the third inning, West Virginia State managed to score with an RBI single, but Fairmont State maintained the lead at 4–1. During the fourth inning, the Yellow Jackets narrowed the gap with a solo home run, but Fairmont State responded with Hess scoring on a single by Avery Townsend, extending the lead to 5–2.

Fairmont State dominated the fifth inning, scoring five runs. Breonna Marietta launched a homer to right field, and Hess delivered another crucial hit, a single to left field, bringing in two more runs. The inning concluded with a single by Paul that drove in the final run. The game ended with Fairmont State leading 10–2.

Delaney Haller pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and two earned runs over 5 innings. She struck out three batters and did not issue any walks.

Bella Hess led the Falcons' offense with three hits, four RBIs, and three runs scored. Emma Paul added three RBIs and two hits. Breonna Marietta made her presence felt by hitting a home run, also collecting one RBI and one run.

Fairmont State will face Glenville State to open the second day of the Mountain East Conference Tournament on Thursday, May 7. The two squads will meet on Field 3 of the James Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia at 12:00 p.m.
