WHEELING, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State women's volleyball team will continue its quest for a Mountain East Conference Championship on Friday evening at 5 p.m. when they battle the University of Charleston at the McDonough Center in Wheeling.
The Falcons advanced to the MEC semifinal round by picking up a 3-1 victory over Urbana on Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals.
Mackenzie Harrison led the Falcons against Urbana with 15 kills and did not commit an error in the match.
Kaitlyn Witsaman also chipped in 14 kills and six digs for the Falcons. FSU also got 12 kills from
Courtney Kress and a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs from
Erin Harwood.
The Falcons had a .310 attacking percentage in the win and also held a 7-1 advantage in total blocks.
Breanna Blot led FSU with five total blocks.
Back on October 16, the Falcons and Golden Eagles met for the only time this season, with FSU taking a 3-1 win on the road. In the win, Harrison recorded seven of her 16 kills in the fourth set to lead FSU past UC.
Erin Harwood (13 kills, 16 digs) and
Jessica Furda (42 assists, 17 digs) both recorded double-doubles in the win over the Golden Eagles earlier this season. Witsaman also just missed a double-double in the match with 12 kills to go with nine digs. The Golden Eagles did hold a 12-3 blocking advantage around the net in the earlier matchup this season.
Top-seeded Wheeling Jesuit will host fifth-seeded Shepherd in this evening's second semifinal starting at 7:30 p.m.
