ASHEBORO, N.C. -- The Fairmont State baseball team opened the season by dropping a pair of non-conference games against Winston-Salem State in Asheboro on Monday afternoon.

The Falcons dropped game one, 6-2, after being ahead 2-1 in the middle of the fourth inning. FSU then dropped a 4-3 decision in game two despite jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

Fairmont State (0-2) got on the board in the top of the first in game one after an error by the first baseman allowed
Adam Meeker to score from third base. After WSSU (8-3) tied the game in the bottom of the first, FSU regained the lead in the fourth when
Sam Orr reached home on a passed ball.

However, FSU was held scoreless the rest of the way and the Rams scored five runs in the last three innings of the game to pick up the 6-2 win.

In game two, Fairmont State got on the board first when
Josh Wine scored from third on a wild pitch.
Alex Levitan gave FSU a 3-0 lead after doubling down the left field line to bring in a pair of runs for the Falcons in the first.

Winston-Salem scored a run in the fourth and a pair of runs in the seventh and the game was tied heading into the eighth inning. In the bottom of the ninth, FSU walked in the game-winning run from third and the Rams took game two, 4-3.

FSU will open MEC play on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Virginia-Wise for a four-game series, starting at 1 p.m.
