FSU Drops Series At Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State baseball team dropped four games over the weekend against Concord, one of the top teams in the Mountain East Conference, after the games were moved from Bridgeport because of recent weather in the area.

Fairmont State (1-9) opened the series with two games on Sunday, dropping the pair by scores of 9-5 and 6-3. Games three and four were on Monday afternoon, back at Anderson Field in Athens, with the Mountain Lions picking up a 4-3 win in game three and a 9-8 victory in the final game of the series.

In the first game on Sunday, Concord used a five-run third inning to run away with the 9-5 win. The teams combined for 22 hits in the game, with FSU holding the 12-10 advantage in hits. FSU, however, committed two errors in the loss. Adam Meeker and Alex Levitan each recorded three hits apiece for the Falcons.

In the second game on Sunday evening, CU scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take control of the game early. The Mountain Lions also performed well defensive in the win, holding the Falcons scoreless until the top of the seventh when Trevor Malnick and Josh Wine each drove in RBI for the Falcons. Frankie Wilson also scored on a wild pitch to give FSU its third run of the game.

Game three of the series on Monday went to extra innings before an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth by Concord clinched the win for the Mountain Lions. The Falcons once again recorded more hits than Concord in the game and the teams combined for five errors. Wine was 3-of-5 with two RBI to lead the FSU offense in the narrow loss.

CU wrapped up its fourth and final win of the series by edging FSU, 9-8, in game four of the series on Monday. With the Mountain Lions leading 9-5 in the top of the sixth, FSU scored three runs in the inning to cut the CU lead to just a single point, 9-8. However, FSU was held off the scoreboard in the seven and Concord wrapped up the sweep.

FSU will attempt to open its home schedule next Saturday when West Virginia State visits the Bridgeport Recreation Complex at 1 p.m.
