BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State split the final two games of its four-game series with West Liberty on Sunday afternoon at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex in Bridgeport.
With the split, the Falcons are now 4-16 overall and 4-14 in conference games. The Hilltoppers improve to 16-8 overall and 12-6 in the MEC.
In game one of the day, the Falcons recorded 10 hits and got a timely two-run single by
Adam Meeker in the bottom of the sixth to give the Falcons the 5-3 victory. In addition to Meeker's game-clinching hit,
Trevor Malnick drove home a pair of runs for the Falcons and
Josh Wine added an RBI single.
Nick Opferman put together an impressive performance on the hill for the Falcons, allowing just three runs on five hits and striking out five batters.
In the second game of the day,
Alex Levitan scored the only run for the Falcons on a double to left field to bring home Meeker in the bottom of the third to tie the game at a run apiece. However, the Hilltoppers scored four unanswered runs in the fifth inning on a trio of RBI doubles to lock up the 5-1 win.
The Falcons will return to Bridgeport Recreation Complex next weekend for a four-game series against WV Wesleyan on Friday and Saturday. The first pitch on Friday is set for 1 p.m.
