The Matchup
- Fairmont State will wrap up the 2017 regular season Thursday evening with a 7:10 p.m. home Mountain East Conference game at Duvall-Rosier Field against West Liberty.
- The Falcons, who are 7-3 overall and 7-2 in the MEC, have an opportunity to record the school's first back-to-back regular seasons of eight or more wins since the 1964 and 1965 Falcons did it. FSU was 10-1 during the regular season in 2016.
- A victory would also give Fairmont a share of second place in the MEC with Notre Dame College. NDC, which is 8-2 both overall and in the league, will visit unbeaten and No. 5 ranked Indianapolis for a nonconference battle in its regular-season finale.
- West Liberty comes into Thursday's game 3-7 overall and 3-6 in MEC play. After starting the season 2-1, the Hilltoppers have lost six of their last seven games. The lone win during that span was a 44-14 victory over Concord on Oct. 28.
- The series between FSU and West Liberty is a close one. The Falcons lead it 41-38-3.
- Fairmont has won the last two meetings with the Hilltoppers, but West Liberty holds a 6-4 advantage during the last 10 years. Three of the last four meetings between the schools have been decided by six or less points, including last season's 21-20 victory by Fairmont in which the Falcons rallied for a pair of touchdowns in the game's final 11:42 to wipe out a 20-7 West Liberty lead.
Offensive Outlook
- Running back
Terrell Charles turned in his second consecutive 100-yard rushing performance in the Falcons' 35-0 win over Concord Saturday. Charles ran for a season-high 134 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries.
- With his 16-yard TD scamper in the third quarter against Concord, which put the Falcons ahead 21-0, he moved into a tie for 10
th place in school history with Larry Blackstone for career rushing touchdowns with 20. Charles is also currently ninth in FSU history in career rushing attempts with 489. For his career he has 2,064 rushing yards and needs just 42 more yards to move into a tie for 10
th place with Ted Jackson (2,106) in that category and 73 more to tie Matt Morris (2,137) for ninth place.
- Since starting quarterback JuJuan Young-Battle and leading receiverÂ
Andre Hall went down with season-ending injuries in a week seven's, 28-23, loss to No. 2 Shepherd sophomoresÂ
Takwan Crews-Naylor andÂ
Shawn Harris have stepped up for the Falcons and played very well.
Crews-Naylor, who took over for Young-Battle at quarterback, is 3-0 as FSU's starter. For the season he's 44-of-77 passing (57.1 percent) for 478 yards and two touchdowns. He's been intercepted twice.
- Harris led FSU Saturday with five catches for a game-high 59 yards and a career-high two touchdowns. For the season Harris now has 27 receptions for 359 yards and three scores.
-
Jeff Iweh has also had a productive season for the FSU offense with 20 catches for 369 yards and four touchdowns on the year.
- Iweh currently ranks 27
th in the country and second in the MEC in yards per reception (18.45).
Defensive Outlook
- Middle linebacker
Marcus Porter is leading the Falcons in tackles for the fourth-consecutive year with 87 as a senior. Porter also has 11.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and a fumble recovery as a senior.
- Porter is currently eighth in school history in total tackles with 328 and third in solo tackles with 200. He needs five total tackles to pass both Tim Byard (328) and Matt Vance (330) and move into sixth place all-time in total tackles and seven solo stops to pass Randy Jones (206) for second place all-time in Fairmont history in solo tackles. He also needs 3.5 tackles for losses to move into a tie for 10
th place in school history in that category.
- Fairmont State's defensive effort was stellar once again Saturday afternoon against Concord University at Callaghan Stadium. The Falcons recorded a 35-0 victory over the Mountain Lions and limited them to just 159 total yards, including 81 through the air and just 78 on the ground.
- The shutout was the first of the season for Fairmont's defense and its first since it shut Concord out last year, 28-0. The back-to-back shutouts of the Mountain Lions are first for FSU in the long-running series between the two schools since 1956 and 1957 when the Falcons posted 27-0 and 20-0 victories.
- Fairmont's defense is currently first in the Mountain East Conference and 18
th in the nation in NCAA Division II in points allowed per game (16.5). Through 10 games Fairmont has surrendered 165 points. If FSU's defense can hold West Liberty to 12 points or less in Thursday's regular-season finale at Duvall-Rosier Field the Falcons' 2017 defense will become the first unit in school history to hold opponents to less than 178 points in an 11-game season since 1981.
- Fairmont's 2006 defense allowed 178 points in 11 games, but the Falcons finished just 4-7 that year. In 1981 when Fairmont made the NAIA playoffs the Falcons finished 9-2 overall and its defense allowed just 160 points in 11 games.
- The school record for points allowed in a season in which Fairmont State played 11 games is 80 and was set by the 1979 defense, which is widely regarded as one of the top two defenses in school history along with the 1967 NAIA National Championship unit, which allowed just 81 points in 11 games.
- Fairmont State's 2017 defense currently ranks first in the MEC and 14
th in the country in total defense (282.2). The Falcons are third in the league and 21
st in the nation in passing yards allowed (164.5) and third in the conference and 35
th in the nation in rushing yards allowed (117.7).
- The Falcons also rank 10
th in the country and second in the league in forced turnovers with 25 on the year. WV Wesleyan leads the league with 26 turnovers this season. FSU is also 14
th in the country with 15 interceptions this season, and ranks 25
th in the country with 10 fumble recoveries on the year.
- Fairmont's six (6) defensive touchdowns this season also rank second in the country, behind McKendree (8).
- FSU is also 20
th in NCAA Division II, averaging 3.00 sacks per game this season.
Special Teams Outlook
- This fall FSU kick
Sam Keil has a single-season, school-record 17 field goals, including a national record-tying six made field goals in an 18-15 overtime victory over Glenville State. He's currently third in school history in career made field goals with 26 and needs one more to tie Nathan White (27) for second place and two more to tie Johnny Dearstine (28) for first place. Keil has also scored 144 career points at FSU and needs four more points to move into a tie for 10
th place in school history in career scoring with Demetrius Rush (148) and Jason Gibson (148).
- Keil currently ranks fifth in the country in field goals per game (1.70) and 28
th in NCAA Division II in field goal percentage (.773).
- Fairmont State's
Samuel Tucker currently ranks 17
th in the country and third in the league with a 41.3 punt average this season.
