FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- It took over 108 minutes to break the scoreless tie, but Fairmont State's
Cassie Whitlatch scored in the second overtime period to give the Falcons a 1-0 victory in their 2017 home opener at Duvall-Rosier Field on Friday evening.

With the win, Fairmont State improves to 2-0-1 on the season. WLU falls to 1-1-1 on the year.

Whitlatch's goal came from 25 yards away into the upper left corner of the net, past West Liberty goalkeeper Lauren Hartnell.

Statistically, the match was evenly contested, as FSU held an 11-10 advantage in shots, including five shots on goal for each team. FSU held a 6-1 advantage in shots during the first half of play.

In overtime, WLU took two shots in the first extra period, and one in the second before Whitlatch's game winner – which was Fairmont's only shot attempt in both overtime periods.

Lake Porter each took two shots in the game for the FSU offense.

In the FSU net,
Shawna Graham faced 10 shot, making five saves in the victory.

Fairmont State will have a short turnaround to prepare for a 2 p.m. kickoff against Urbana on Sunday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field.
