Late Goal Lifts Urbana Past FSU

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State women's soccer suffered its first setback of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling to Urbana in a 2-1 final at Duvall-Rosier Field.

Urbana's Alyssa Edwards scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick at the 74:36 mark during the second half of play.

The goal broke a 1-1 tie that had stood since the 62nd minute, when Fairmont State's Gabriella Mascaro scored from 30 yards out following an Urbana foul. Mascaro's goal went past Katherine Beech in the top left corner of the goal.

Urbana provided the first goal of the game just two minutes in, when Alyssa Garberich set up Savannah Morgan's first goal of the season. Garberich found Morgan driving down the left side of the field to set up the opening goal of the game.

Fairmont State held a 10-7 advantage in shots, including a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. Mascaro led the Falcons with three shots on the afternoon, and Erica Uselton and Stephanie DeLawder both chipped in two shots apiece for FSU on offense.

The Falcons will now prepare for a 4 p.m. kickoff at Notre Dame College on Thursday afternoon. Notre Dame is currently in a tie for first place in the Mountain East with a 2-0 record both overall and in the league.
