Falcons Host Davis & Elkins To Open MEC Play

Fairmont State Women's Basketball Notebook

- The Fairmont State women's basketball team will open Mountain East Conference play on Saturday afternoon when first-year conference member Davis & Elkins visits Dan Cava Court and Joe Retton Arena. Tip is set for 2 p.m.

- Fairmont State enters the game with a 2-3 overall record after snapping a three-game skid with a 77-66 win over Alderson Broaddus on Wednesday at home.

- Junior guard Sierra Kotchman is leading the Falcons this season, averaging 23.4 points and a team-high 6.2 rebounds per outing. Kotchman has scored 20-points or more in three games this season, including a career-high 37 points in the season opening win over Lock Haven at the MEC/PSAC Challenge.

- Junior guard Kamrin Weimer is second on the team in scoring this season, averaging 13.2 points to go with 3.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. Weimer has reached double-figures in every game for the Falcons this season, and is second on the team in 3-point field goals with 11.

- Weimer recorded her best outing of the season last Wednesday at Gannon, finishing the game with 20 points on a 6-of-8 performance from behind the arc.

- The 20-point scoring performance against the Lady Knights set a new career high.

- Brooke Kurucz and Rachel Laskody are also averaging double-figure scoring at 10.8 points per game for the Falcons this season.

- Laskody is also second on the team in rebounds at 6.0 per game, and had her best outing of the season on Wednesday against Alderson Broaddus with 17 points and 13 rebounds. The senior has reached double-figures in each of the last three games for the Falcons.

- After being held scoreless in limited action against Lock Haven in the season opener, Kurucz has reached double-figure scoring in each of the last four games, including 20 points against Gannon, and 13 points on Wednesday against Alderson Broaddus.

- Presley Tuttle has stepped into the sixth-man role for the Falcons this season and is averaging just under 10 points per game (9.8) off the bench for the Falcons.

 

Fairmont State Men's Basketball Notebook

- The Tim Koenig era at Fairmont State is off to a 2-0 start after Fairmont State picked up wins over Millersville (87-86) and Slippery Rock (85-78) during the Joe Retton Classic to open the season back on Nov. 8 and Nov. 9.

- With the victories, the Falcons remain unbeaten at the Joe Retton Classic, an event that has taken place each year since 2013-14.

- Last week Fairmont State stepped up a level to play Bowling Green (OH) in a Division I exhibition game at the Stroh Center in Bowling Green, Ohio. Bowling Green limited Fairmont State to just 35.8 percent from the field and picked up an 88-66 win over the Falcons.

- Four players reached double-figures for the Falcons in the exhibition, including 12 points apiece from Cole VonHandorf and Shem Golek. The Falcons also got 10 points apiece from Dale Bonner and Jacob Brown.

- Cole VonHandorf opened the season with a pair of 20-point scoring performances against Millersville and Slippery Rock during the Joe Retton Classic, including 24 points and four steals in the season-opener against Millersville, and 23 points, four rebounds and five assists against Slippery Rock.

- VonHandorf is shooting nearly 52 percent from the field, 46 percent from behind the arc, and 79 percent from the free throw line.

- Dale Bonner is second on the team in scoring this season, averaging 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. Bonner scored 17 points to go with five assists and four boards in Fairmont's season opening win over Millersville, before adding 12 points and four rebounds against Slippery Rock the next night.

- Kenzie Melko-Marshall is third on the team in scoring this season, averaging 13.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Melko-Marshall scored 16 points in the season opening win over Millersville, before adding 10 points and eight rebounds against Slippery Rock.

- Seth Younkin is Fairmont's fourth player averaging double-figures this season at 11.5 points and a team-high 6.0 boards per game.
