ELKINS, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State wrestling team split a pair of Mountain East Conference duals on Saturday afternoon at Davis & Elkins College to open the delayed 2021 season. The Falcons opened the day with a 27-15 win over Wheeling University in the second dual of the day, before falling to the host Senators by a final of 34-17 to wrap up the day.

Colin Johnston, who led the Falcons in a dual for the first time this afternoon, helped Fairmont State earn its first-ever dual meet victory over a Mountain East program with the win over Wheeling.

The dual between the Falcons and Cardinals featured bouts in just three weight classes this afternoon, with Fairmont State's T.J. Boyd (285 LBS) picking up a 3-0 decision over Wheeling's Clarouly Meca to highlight the contest for the Falcons. Fairmont State also picked up six points with default victories at 149 (
Lukas Martin), 157 (Alex Jablonski), 174 (
Cade Moisey) and 197 (
Riley Gallagher).

WU earned a pair victories on the mat, with Normon Richmond picking up a fall victory over Fairmont's
Taven Swick at the 4:40 mark in the 165 LBS match, and Deshawn Mercadel topping
Tucker Lawson by an 8-5 decision in the 184 LBS bout. Wheeling also picked up six points at 133 LBS by default to add to its final score.

Next, Fairmont State took the mat for the second time of the day to face host Davis & Elkins. Fairmont State had a trio of wins on the mat against D&E, including a 10-6 decision for Martin at 149 LBS, a 10-1 major decision by Moisey at 174 LBS, and a 13-2 major decision by Gallagher at 197 LBS. Boyd also picked up six points for the heavyweight bout by default.

The Senators were able to double the Falcons on the scoreboard in large part by gaining six points for each of the first three weight classes (125, 133, 141). D&E also added points to the scoreboard with wins by John Finnerty at 157 LBS, Noah Tarr at 165 LBS and Kyle Wojtaszek at 184 LBS.
