Women's Basketball Faces Glenville State and Concord This Week

The Fighting Falcons travel to Glenville for a matchup versus the nationally-ranked Pioneers before hosting Concord at Joe Retton Arena on Saturday (Feb. 4).

The Fairmont State women's basketball team gears up for a game at No. 5/12 Glenville State on Wednesday (Feb. 1) before returning to Joe Retton Arena on Saturday (Feb. 4) for a matchup versus Concord.
 
Fighting Falcons Facts
  • Fairmont State picked up a convincing 14-point win over No. 18 West Virginia State on Jan. 25. Five Falcons were in double-figures in the victory. On Saturday (Jan. 28), Fairmont State managed to tie the game in the final minute after trailing by 18 points in the third quarter. UC escaped in the final moments of the game after draining a trio of free throws.
  • Fairmont State climbed up one spot in the D2SIDA Women's Basketball Atlantic Region poll on Jan. 30 and now ranks seventh in the region.
  • Fairmont State enters this week with a record of 14-7. The Falcons sit in sixth place in the MEC standings and are 9-5 in conference contests.
  • Through 21 games, Fairmont State has scored an average of 78.4 points per game, which is the 12th-highest scoring average in NCAA Division II.
  • Fairmont State makes an average of 19.71 free throws per game, which is the highest average in the country. The Fighting Falcons also top the conference in free throw attempts per game (27.29). Katy Darnell and Alyssa DeAngelo both rank in the top 20 of made free throws in the country and have converted a combined 200 free throws this season.
  • DeAngelo is Fairmont State's leading scorer, averaging 19.0 points per game. She has made 123 field goals and 50 three-point baskets, both leading Fairmont State. She scored her 1,000th career point on Jan. 16th in the Fairmont State win at Salem. She has made 94 three-point field goals in her three seasons at Fairmont State.
  • Darnell has posted an average of 15.4 points per game, which ranks 12th in the conference. Darnell is ranked fourth in the MEC with 44 steals and averages 7.5 rebounds per game, which is the seventh-highest average in the league. Darnell leads the Falcons with five double-doubles.
  • Jalen Gibbs led Fairmont State with 21 points and eight rebounds in the Jan. 21 win at Frostburg State. Gibbs has recorded four double-doubles this season and is the team's leading rebounder with 8.0 rebounds per game.
  • Charleston, W.Va. native Jertaya Hall has averaged 10.3 points per game and has forced 23 steals on the defensive end of the floor. Hall poured in 17 points in the win versus WVSU, which included five three-point baskets. 
  • Madeline Huffman has handed out a team-high 68 assists. The Parkersburg Catholic alumna lit it up from beyond the arc in the WVSU win and swished four three-point buckets in four attempts.
  • Madeline's sister, Leslie Huffman, scored a season-high 21 points versus Charleston. It was the freshman's first 20-point game of her career. She made 11-of-12 shots from the free-throw line at UC.
  • Aaliyah Brunny, who is averaging 8.1 points per game, tied her career-high scoring mark in the Jan. 18 game versus Davis & Elkins. Brunny drilled four three-point baskets in her performance. The Fighting Falcons made a season-high 12 shots from beyond the arc in the 82-65 win.
  • Head Coach Stephanie Anderson is in her fourth season leading Fairmont State women's basketball. Anderson has won 51 games during her time overseeing the program.
 
 
Scouting Glenville State
The Pioneers were ranked fifth in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) poll and 12th in the D2SIDA Women's Basketball national polls. Glenville State secured two MEC wins last week. GSU knocked off Alderson Broaddus 104-74 on Jan. 25 and Notre Dame College 98-59 on Jan. 28. Glenville State holds a record of 18-2 and is 12-2 in MEC action.

GSU is ranked as the top team in the nation in NCAA Division II in turnovers forced per game (28.15). The Pioneers also rank in the top five nationally in scoring margin (21.4) scoring offense (89.1), steals per game (15.8), three-point attempts per game (31.2), three-pointers per game (10.2), and turnover margin (10.95). Mickayla Perdue leads the Pioneers with an average of 16 points per game so far this season and ranks third in the MEC with three-pointers per game (2.95) and three-pointers on the season (59). On the glass, Breanna Campbell averages 5.7 rebounds per game and ranks third in the conference in steals (45).

Kim Stephens is currently in her seventh season as the head coach of the women's basketball program in Glenville, W.Va. The Parkersburg native is an alumnus of the successful basketball program. After the recent Pioneers' run to a 2022 NCAA Division II Championship, Stephens was named the WBCA National Coach of the year, MEC Women's Sports Coach of the Year, and earned the Furfari Award for the State's top College Coach.
 
Previous Matchup Versus the Pioneers
The Fighting Falcons and Pioneers met on Dec. 10 in Fairmont at Joe Retton Arena where the Fighting Falcons fell short in an 89-71 loss. Gibbs led Fairmont State with 16 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Gibbs tied for the highest-scoring player during the contest. Darnell scored 14 points to go along with six boards. DeAngelo chipped in with 12 points and went 5-for-9 from the field. 

Scouting Concord
Last week, Concord defeated both Notre Dame College 67-50 on Jan. 25 and Alderson Broaddus 93-77 on Jan. 28. The Mountain Lions hold a record of 7-12 overall and 5-9 in Mountain East Conference competition.

Concord is ranked third in the conference in free throws made per game (15.21), offensive rebounds per game (13.9), and rebounds per game (39.68). Abbie Smith scores 12.4 points per game while also leading on the glass in rebounds (7.5 rebounds per game). Jaisah Smith leads her team in steals on the season (44), as well as netting the team's second-highest points per game average (11.2).
Tesla Southcott was selected to lead the CU women's basketball program on May 23, 2022. Southcott spent time under the previous head coach, Kenny Osborne, as the assistant for eight seasons. As a player, she played at Forum College, a Division III program, where she earned the coveted 1,000-point mark in her career. Southcott went on to be named a 2012-13 WBCA Division III Honorable Mention All-American during her senior season.
 
Previous Matchup Versus the Mountain Lions
Fairmont State and Concord met earlier in the season on Dec. 6, where the Fighting Falcons claimed a victory, 78-69. Gibbs and Darnell both posted double-doubles in the matchup. Alyssa DeAngelo led with 17 points and shot 6-for-13 from the field.
