HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University women's tennis team faced off against Mercyhurst University in the first round of the NCAA Atlantic Regional. Coming down to the number three singles,
Jada Mae Okoye picked up the win as the Falcons earned the 4-3 win.
The win is the first NCAA Tournament win for the women's tennis team in its program history.
Starting in doubles play, all three matches were tightly contested. At No. 1 doubles, Mercyhurst was able to capture the win over
Hope Backx and
Lara Smith, 7-5.Â
Laura Maciel and
Karla Liegle was able to even it up with a win at No. 3 doubles, 7-5. On court two,
Maria Fonseca and
Jada Mae Okoye was able to to clinch the match point for Fairmont State by taking No. 2 by the score of 7-5.
The Lakers quickly took the overall lead as they won in straight-sets at first and fourth singles. At No. 5,
Lara Smith dropped the first set, 6-2, but bounced back and won the second set (6-0) to force a third. Smith carried the momentum to the third set and won, 6-1 and evened the match at two.
At No. 6 singles, Liegle was able to fight back and win the first set, 7-5. She then found a groove and claimed the second set, 6-2. Moving to the No. 2 matchup, Backx fell in the first set 6-4, however, she returned the favor and won the second, 7-5. Ultimately, Backx fell in the third set, 6-1.
With the match tied at three, all eyes turned to court three where Okoye was in a battle with Mercyhurst's Roisin Murphy. In the first set, the two were even until Okoye was able to pull away and win the set, 7-5. In the second set, Okoye held the advantage early until Murphy won two-straight games and went up 6-5.
Facing what could be the deciding game-point, Okoye answered the call and forced the second set to a tiebreaker. Quickly, Okoye grabbed the early lead and did not go back, winning the set, 7-6, and the match for the Falcons, 4-3.
Fairmont State will now face the top-seed, the University of Charleston on Saturday, May 11. Start time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
