Fairmont State Falls in MEC Title Match to Top-Seeded Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Fairmont State University women's tennis team battled the University of Charleston in the MEC Championship. The Falcons were bested by the Golden Eagles, 4-0.

The doubles point proved to be a tightly contested battle, with Fairmont State earning a key win at No. 2 doubles. Maria Fonseca and Stephanie Gopar delivered a strong 6-2 victory to keep the Falcons in the mix. However, Charleston secured wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to claim the early 1-0 advantage.

In singles play, Fairmont State faced a tough challenge against Charleston's top lineup. Fonseca competed at No. 1 singles but fell in straight sets, while Hope Backx dropped her match at No. 2. At No. 3, Gopar battled in a close opening set before her match ended early due to retirement.

Several matches showed the Falcons' competitiveness before going unfinished. Lara Smith was in the midst of her No. 4 match, while Laura Maciel and Alara Akgul were also still competing in their respective singles positions when the overall result was decided.

Fairmont State will now await the selection show for the 2026 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship. The show starts at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 4.
