BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- The Fairmont State University men's and women's tennis teams began play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Regional Championship on Friday (Sept. 13), hosted by Bloomsburg University.
On the men's side,
Elia Barozzi won his opening match against Mathis Amsellem of Edinboro, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) as
Hugo Massoni was victorious in his round of 64 match, defeating Franco Farias of West Virginia State, 6-3, 6-3.
Mohamed El Helaly and
Kan Watanabe also advanced to the round of 32 as El Helaly won 6-0, 6-0 while Watanabe advanced on scores of 7-5 and 6-2. The last individual to advance was
Gabriel Masu as he topped German Diaz Martin from Frostburg State, 6-4, 3-6, 12-10.
Moving to men's doubles, the team of
Kan Watanabe and
Minwoo Lee won their first two matches by the score of 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. Also advancing to the quarters is the pairing of El Helaly and Massoni as they won their first match 7-6 before a round of 16 score of 7-5. Barozzi and Masu were another partnership for the Falcons making it to the quarters with scores of 7-6 and 6-1. The last men's double grouping was
Jasper de Bruijn and
Alex Stacy as they won their first match 6-4 before a tiebreaker victory in the round of 32, 7-6 (7-3) to qualify for the quarters.
For the women's team,
Lara Smith made it out of the round of 64 in singles action with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Bluefield State's Raajitha Koganti.
Hope Backx was victorious in her lone match of the day with scores of 6-4 and 6-1 to best Frostburg State's Lorena Pintar. The last Fairmont State player to make it to the round of 32 was
Maria Fonseca as she cruised her way to win, 6-2, 6-1.
As for doubles, Backx and Smith were seeded fifth and did not disappoint in their first two matches with wins of 6-3 and 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. The other doubles pairing was Fonseca and
Jada Mae Okoye but they fell in the first round to Bloomsburg's Jennifer McDonald/Alexis Quackenbush, 6-4.
Doubles quarterfinal matches open the day on Saturday, September 14 from Bloomsburg University. The continuation of singles bracket will resume after doubles play.
