BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- The Fairmont State University men's and women's tennis teams continued their play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championships.

Starting in the men's open singles draw, Kan Watanabe won his round of 32 match 6-1, 6-3 over Jaime Soria before taking down Alberto Nordio, 7-6, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals. Gabriel Masu was victorious in his match of the day over Johan Karlsson (7-5, 6-2) before falling to top-seeded Jorge Perez (6-2, 6-4). Mohamed El Helaly was another Falcon to win his opening match (7-5, 6-4) but fell in the round of 16 (6-2, 6-3).

Hugo Massoni was in a tightly contested match in the round of 32 as he won the opening set 6-2 but fell in the second 7-6 (7-5) and lost the super tiebreaker, 10-7. Elia Barozzi was the final Fairmont State competitor to go as he cruised in his first match (6-3, 6-4). In his second match of the day, Barozzi won the first set 6-3 but dropped the second set 6-0 and the super tiebreaker, 10-2.

For doubles, the pairing of Watanabe and Minwoo Lee fell in the quarterfinals, 7-5, but the team of El Helaly and Massoni advanced to the semifinals with a 7-5 win. Jasper de Bruijn and Alex Stacy were taken down in the quarters, 6-3, as Barozzi and Masu continued their run with a 6-2 win.

For the women's team, Lara Smith dropped her round of 32 match in three sets, 7-6, 2-6, 3-10 with Hope Backx also going down in the round of 32, 4-6, 3-6. Maria Fonseca was victorious in her round of 32 match, 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 but fell to the number-two seed in the sweet 16, 1-6, 1-6. In doubles action, Backx and Smith fell in the quarterfinals to the top-seeded pair, 6-2.

Fairmont State will wrap up its play at the Regional Championships on Sunday, September 15 with doubles play starting at 10:00 a.m. and singles action starting afterwards.
