Men's and Women's Tennis Competes at ITA Regional Championships

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- The Fairmont State University men's and women's tennis teams competed at the ITA Regional Championships hosted by Bloomsburg University.

Here are some highlights of the competition from the past weekend. Mohamed El Helaly started his tournament with 6-4, 6-0 win over Hassan Ammar from Edinboro University. He continued his run with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win over Filippo Buffrom of Davis & Elkins. In the round of 16, El Helaly topped Vicente Garcia (University of Charleston) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Unfortunately, his run ended in the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Leon Grassnickel from Edinboro University.

Staying on the men's side, Gabriel Masu kicked off with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win over Gerardo Garrido from Edinboro University. Masu then faced Christopher Wirahadipoernomo of Davis & Elkins with the first set going to Masu, 6-2, before dropping the second, 6-1. In a super tiebreaker set, Masu took home the win with a 10-5 victory. In the round of 16, Masu battled Nils Pottbecker (University of Charleston) and fell in three sets by scores of 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) and 10-2.

On the women's side, Hope Backx opened with a straight-set win over Aishwarya Prasad (Salem), 6-4, 6-2. She then faced Sofia Benito (Edinboro) and picked up another straight-set win by scores of 6-3, 6-2. Unfortunately, in the round of 16, Backx fell to Nicole Kempton of Slippery Rock University, 6-2, 6-1.

In women's doubles, Backx and Lara Smith defeated Vanessa Mueller/Maria Gomez Yanes (University of Charleston) by the score of 8-1. Backx and Smith continued their run with a win over Lauren Hayes and Marian Hayes from Millersville, 8-6. In the round of 16, Backx and Smith were bested by Lea Von Kozierowski and Asel Calbay from IUP by the score of 9-8 (7-3).

Both teams will wrap up the fall schedule on Saturday, October 11 against Tiffin University. Start time from the Fairmont State University Tennis Courts is set for 1:00 p.m.
