HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Fairmont State University women's tennis team turned in a dominant performance, sweeping both doubles and singles play to secure a decisive victory over Berry College, 7-0.
The Falcons opened the match by taking control in doubles, winning all three matches to claim the opening point. At No. 1 doubles,
Hope Backx and
Lara Smith set the tone with a 6–2 win over Sara Mejia and Carolina Hanson. The No. 2 pair of
Maria Fonseca and
Jada Mae Okoye matched that scoreline with a 6–2 victory against Paige Evans and Maggie Cox. Fairmont State completed the doubles sweep at No. 3, where
Alara Akgul and
Laura Maciel delivered a strong 6–1 win over Sydney Coppola and Charlee Eidson.
Fairmont State continued its momentum in singles, winning all six matches in straight sets. At the top of the lineup,
Hope Backx was dominant in a 6–1, 6–1 victory over Sara Mejia at No. 1 singles.
Lara Smith followed with an identical 6–1, 6–1 win at No. 2 singles against Carolina Hanson.
The Falcons added another point at No. 3 singles as
Stephanie Gopar earned a 6–2, 6–2 victory over Maggie Cox.
Jada Mae Okoye battled to a 6–4, 6–2 win at No. 4 singles against Paige Evans to keep the sweep intact.
At No. 5 singles,
Alara Akgul secured a 6–2, 6–2 win over Charlee Eidson, while
Luiza Parreira closed out the match with a 6–1, 6–1 victory against Sydney Coppola at No. 6 singles.
Fairmont State (4-2) will face the University of Mount Olive in the final match from South Carolina on Thursday, March 12. Match time is set for 12:30 p.m.
