FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's tennis team faced Edinboro University. The Falcons nearly swept the Fighting Scots, 6-1.
The Falcons set the tone early by taking all three doubles matches. At No. 1,
Hope Backx and
Lara Smith were dominant in a 6-1 win, while
Maria Fonseca and
Stephanie Gopar followed with a solid 6-3 victory at No. 2. The No. 3 pairing of
Alara Akgul and
Laura Maciel added to the sweep via forfeit.
In singles, Fairmont State continued its momentum, winning five of the six contested matches. Fonseca led the charge at the top spot with a composed 6-3, 6-3 win, and Backx backed that up with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2. Gopar was equally impressive at No. 3, cruising 6-2, 6-2.
Despite a setback at No. 4 where
Lara Smith fell in straight sets, the Falcons quickly regained control. Maciel turned in one of the most dominant performances of the day with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5, and Akgul closed things out with a win by forfeit at No. 6.
Fairmont State (7-3) hits the road to face Indiana University on Friday, March 27. The match is set to start at 4:00 p.m.
