Women's Tennis Hosts Charleston

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's tennis team hosted the University of Charleston. The Falcons fell to the Golden Eagles, 6-1.

In doubles play, the Falcons picked up a key win at No. 2 as Maria Fonseca and Stephanie Gopar delivered a solid 6-3 victory over Vanessa Mueller and Viola Hirzberger. However, Charleston claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3, narrowly taking the top flight in a tight tiebreak (7-7, 6-4) and adding a 6-2 win at No. 3.

Heading into singles, Fairmont State looked to respond, and Gopar provided the highlight for the Falcons. Competing at No. 3, she earned a convincing straight-sets win, 6-1, 6-4, over Mueller.

Despite that effort, Charleston controlled the remainder of singles action. Fonseca faced a tough challenge at No. 1, falling in straight sets, while Hope Backx battled at No. 2 but came up short in a competitive first set before dropping the match in two. Lara Smith, Laura Maciel, and Alara Akgul each fought hard but were unable to turn the momentum, as Charleston secured victories in the remaining flights.

Fairmont State (10-6, 2-1) hits the road on Thursday, April 16 to face Bluefield State University. Start time is set for 2:00 p.m.
