BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's tennis team ventured south to face Bluefield State University. The Falcons swept Big Blue, 7-0.
The Falcons set the tone early by securing the doubles point with wins across all three flights. At No. 1,
Hope Backx and
Lara Smith picked up a victory via retirement, while the duo of
Maria Fonseca and
Stephanie Gopar earned a solid 6-4 decision at No. 2.
Alara Akgul and
Laura Maciel capped off doubles play with an impressive 6-2 win in the No. 3 position.
Carrying that momentum into singles, Fairmont State left no doubt, winning all six matches in straight sets. Fonseca led the way at No. 1 with a decisive 6-3, 6-1 victory, followed by Backx at No. 2 with an identical scoreline. Gopar secured a 6-2, 6-3 win in the No. 3 spot, while Smith controlled her match at No. 4, 6-2, 6-1.
The Falcons were especially dominant in the lower half of the lineup, as Maciel and Akgul each delivered flawless performances at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, both earning 6-0, 6-0 victories.Â
Fairmont State (11-6) remains on the road on Saturday, April 18 to face West Liberty University. Match time is set for 3:00 p.m.
