Bryan Spitzer Named Director of Athletics at Fairmont State University

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont State University is proud to announce that Bryan Spitzer has been named the new Director of Athletics and will lead the Fighting Falcons Athletic Programs.

"Falcon Athletics is integral to the identity of Fairmont State University and holds a special place in the hearts of our community, students, faculty and staff, and alumni," said President Mike Davis. "Because athletics means so much to so many, it is essential that we have a leader who brings not only expertise, but a genuine passion for the Fighting Falcons. I am fully confident that Bryan embodies these qualities and will provide strong leadership as our new Director of Athletics."

Spitzer, who currently serves as the Associate Director of Athletics for NCAA Compliance, will assume the role effective July 1, and current Director of Athletics Greg Bamberger will transition into the position of Vice President of Athletics.

"I am deeply honored to be given the opportunity to serve as the Director of Athletics at Fairmont State University—a place that has shaped my life for more than two decades," said Spitzer. "From my time as a student-athlete to my years working within our athletics department, this institution has always meant more than just competition—it's about people, pride, and purpose. I am committed to building on our strong foundation, supporting our student-athletes, and leading with integrity as we continue to elevate Fairmont State Athletics together."

Spitzer joined the Fairmont State University Athletic staff in 2018 as the Director of NCAA Compliance. During his time within the department, Fairmont State has seen conference championships in acrobatics and tumbling, men's and women's basketball, women's soccer, softball and men's tennis.  Additionally, his understanding of the recent rule changes within the NCAA with respect to NIL and the transfer portal has been vital to some of this success.

"We are very pleased to name Bryan Spitzer our new Director of Athletics," said Bamberger. "Bryan has been part of Fairmont State for many years now starting as a student-athlete to his current role and has been an integral part of the success of Fairmont State Athletics not only on the playing surface but in the classroom and community. His time in athletics, especially the past five years, has prepared him for this opportunity. We have no doubt that he will continue to grow the success of Fighting Falcon athletics and Fairmont State University."

Before joining the athletics staff, Spitzer worked for a decade in the University's Admissions and Recruitment Office. During his tenure in that division, he served as a recruiter as well as the Assistant Director. In the fall of 2014, Spitzer was named the 2014 Rick Snow Young Professional of the Year, awarded by WVACRAO (West Virginia Association of College Registrars and Admissions Officers). The award is given to one employee per year in the state of West Virginia.

Spitzer originally arrived at campus as a student-athlete where he was a four-year starting pitcher for the baseball team. Upon graduating with a degree in Business Administration in 2009, he joined the baseball staff as a pitching coach.

Spitzer was a five-sport standout at Greenbrier West High School. He and wife, Sierra, who was a former Fairmont State tennis player, currently reside in Fairmont.
