FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The Fairmont State University women's tennis team delivered a commanding performance on the courts, sweeping the doubles point and rolling through singles play to secure a dominant victory over Davis & Elkins, 6-1.
The Falcons set the tone early with a clean sweep in doubles competition. The No. 1 pairing of
Hope Backx and
Lara Smith cruised to a 6-1 win, while
Maria Fonseca and
Stephanie Gopar matched that score at No. 2.
Alara Akgul and
Laura Maciel completed the sweep with another 6-1 victory at No. 3, giving Fairmont State a strong 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
In singles play, the Falcons continued their momentum with wins in five of six matches. Fonseca led the charge at the top spot with a 6-4, 6-2 decision. Gopar was in control at No. 3, taking the first set 6-0 and leading 5-2 before play concluded.
Smith added a solid 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4, while Maciel dominated her opponent in the second set en route to a 6-4, 6-0 victory. Akgul capped the scoring for Fairmont State with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6.
Fairmont State (16-3, 4-1) wraps up the regular season on Sunday, April 26 against Frostburg State University. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m.
