FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The Fairmont State University women's tennis team faced Frostburg State University to close the regular season schedule. The Falcons defeated the Bobcats, 5-2.
Prior to the match, the team honored
Maria Fonseca as it was Senior Day.
The Falcons jumped out to an early lead by sweeping all three doubles matches to secure the opening point. At No. 1,
Hope Backx and
Lara Smith led the way with a 6-3 win, while
Maria Fonseca and
Stephanie Gopar delivered a flawless 6-0 victory at No. 2.
Alara Akgul and
Laura Maciel completed the sweep at No. 3 with a 6-2 decision, giving Fairmont State a 1-0 advantage.
In singles play, the Falcons continued to build on their momentum with wins on four courts.
Hope Backx picked up a solid 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2, and
Stephanie Gopar followed with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3.
Lara Smith added another point at No. 4 with a 6-4, 6-1 decision, while
Laura Maciel dominated at No. 5, cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 win.
Fairmont State (14-6, 5-1) awaits to see where it will be seeded in the Mountain East Conference Championship. The championship starts on Saturday, May 2 from Charleston, West Virginia.
