BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - The Mountain East Conference has announced the winners of this week's Male and Female Tennis Player of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
 
Fairmont State Mohamed El Helaly has been named the MEC Men's Tennis Player of the Week while fellow Fairmont State's Stephanie Gopar has been named the MEC Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
 
El Helaly, a senior from Cairo, Egypt, helped the Falcons post a 2-0 week to finish the regular season, Mohamed El Helaly was a perfect 4-0. In the team's 5-2 win over Davis & Elkins, El Helaly and Gustavo Masu defeated Filippo Buffo/ Simon Kiekbeld at No. 3 doubles, 6-4. At No. 5 singles, El Helaly then bested Filippo Buffo in straight sets, 6-4/6-0. As Fairmont State swept Frostburg State, 7-0, El Helaly and Masu won at No. 3 doubles over Tiago Iser/ Noah Fisher, 7-6 (7-4). At No. 5 singles, El Helaly took down Sergi Rodriguez in straight sets, 6-4/6-0.
 
Gopar, a junior from Tehuacan, Mexico, helped Fairmont State go 2-0 this week with wins over Davis & Elkins (6-1) and Frostburg State (5-2). In the two matches, Stephanie Gopar was a perfect 4-0. Against D&E, at No. 2 doubles, Gopar and Maria Fonseca bested Lilly Wentzler/ Fabienne Lahn, 6-1. Then at no. 3 singles, Gopar won in straight sets over Lilly Wentzler, 6-0/5-2 (unfinished). In the team's win over Frostburg State, Gopar and Fonseca defeated Patricia Castejon/ Ximena Ku, 6-0. In singles action, Gopar bested Alyssa Kush in consecutive sets, 6-2/6-2.
