FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's tennis team hosted Salem University on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons swept the Tigers, 7-0.
The Falcons set the tone early by taking all three doubles courts. At No. 1,
Hope Backx and
Lara Smith controlled the match with a 6-1 victory, while
Maria Fonseca and
Stephanie Gopar followed with a strong 6-2 win at No. 2. Fairmont State secured the doubles point outright when
Alara Akgul and
Luiza Parreira earned a win by forfeit at No. 3.
Carrying momentum into singles, Fairmont State continued to overwhelm Salem, winning every completed match. Fonseca led the charge at the top spot with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory. Backx added another straight-sets win at No. 2 (6-4, 6-4), and Gopar matched that scoreline at No. 3 to keep the Falcons firmly in control.
Smith battled through the most competitive match of the day at No. 4, grinding out a hard-fought three-set victory, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 11-9, showcasing resilience in the decisive super tiebreak.
Laura Maciel added to the tally with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 win at No. 5, while Akgul picked up an additional point via forfeit at No. 6.
Fairmont State (10-5) hosts the University of Charleston in conference matchup on Saturday, April 11. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
