BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Fairmont State and Wheeling Jesuit split a Mountain East Conference weekend series at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex as the Falcons celebrated senior day on Saturday prior to the start of the series.
Following the series, the Falcons are now 7-27 overall and 7-25 in the league.
In game one of the weekend, Justin Fritts scattered five hits in a shut-out victory over the Falcons. FSU also committed four turnovers in the loss and did not have an extra-base hit. Patrick Ammar, Joe San Felippo and Dillon Sunnafrank and Anthony Connacher each drove in runs for Wheeling in the 4-0 victory.
Alex Levitan's two run home run in the fifth helped the Falcons to a six-run flurry in the final two innings of game two to give the Falcons the split on day one. The Falcons also recorded eight hits in the win and
Cody Toothman (1-1) struck out seven batters in four and a third innings to pick up the win for the Falcons on the hill.
In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader,
Trevor Malnick and
Dorian Hetzel each homered to help FSU to an 8-3 victory.
Josh Wine,
Adam Meeker,
Jacob Whitmore and Malnick also drove in RBI on deep base hits for the Falcons. Malnick homered and singled in the victory with four runs batted-in.
After
Jamie Allard faced just one batter in the opening inning of his final game as a Falcon,
Nick Opferman (2-2) struck out 10 batters and allowed just three runs in the victory.
Wheeling Jesuit got the series split by scoring nine runs in the first three innings of game four to roll to the 9-2 victory. Levitan and
Maverick Keller each brought home runs on sacrifice hits to provide the only runs for FSU in the loss. Despite getting defeated 9-2, Wheeling only held a 10-9 advantage in hits over the Falcons.
