The Series
- Fairmont State and West Liberty will meet for the 154th time in Saturday's NCAA Division II Showcase Game at the ASRC. Fairmont State owns an 87-66 all-time series record over the 'Toppers.
- The Falcons will be looking for their first sweep over the Hilltoppers since the 2003-04 season under head coach Butch Haswell. That season the Falcons defeated WLU 78-64 on the road, and 103-83 at home.
- The teams have split the regular season home-and-home in five of the last six seasons, with the home team winning each of the contests. WLU swept the regular season meetings during the 2015-16 season.
- Dating back to the 2004-05 season, though, West Liberty has won 30 of the 36 matchups (including postseason) between the programs. Five of Fairmont State's six wins during that stretch came at Fairmont's Joe Retton Arena.
- The last time Fairmont State defeated West Liberty at the ASRC was on Feb. 14, 2008 – an 88-79 victory under head coach Tim Murphy.
Earlier This Season at Fairmont State
- In the first meeting of the season back on Dec. 9, Jason Jolly banked in an off-balanced jumper with just over a season remaining to give Fairmont State a 106-104 home victory over then-No. 8 West Liberty at Joe Retton Arena.
- Fairmont State has won five of the last six meetings against West Liberty at Joe Retton Arena, and the Hilltoppers have been ranked in the top 10 in the country during each matchup.Â
- Vonte Montgomery and Jolly each scored 30 points in December's victory, including a career-high 33 points from Montgomery. Jolly finished with 30 points, including seven 3-pointers.
- Andrew Emrick also came off the bench and chipped in 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field.
- West Liberty had five players reach double-figures in the setback, led by Yahel Hill with 25 points on 8-of-13 from the field. Dalton Bolon also chipped in 24 points to go with 11 rebounds and four assists.
- Both teams shot over 50 percent form the field in the game.
- The game features 16 ties and nine lead changes. However, the Falcons led for the final 11:58 of the game, with the exception of a pair of ties at the 11:27 mark and the 0:23-second mark.
Behind The Arc
- Fairmont State's offensive is built by its ability to find open looks and make shots from behind the arc. In fact, the Falcons rank fifth in NCAA Division II in made 3-pointers per game this season – averaging 12.0 per game.
- Fairmont's 228 made 3-pointers on the year are the eight most in the country. The Falcons have also attempted 573 three-point shots, which ranks 19th in the country.
- Perhaps ever more impressive is Fairmont State is shooting just under 40 percent from behind the arc as a team (228-573, 39.8%).
- Jolly currently ranks second in NCAA Division II in 3-point field goals per game (4.00) and total made 3-pointers (76). He trails Concord's Jair Rodgers, who has 77 on the season.
- Jolly has also attempted the ninth most three's in NCAA Division II and ranks 28th n the country in 3-point field goal percentage at 44.7 percent from behind the arc.
- In total, five Fairmont State players have made at least 25 three-pointers this season. After Jolly, Vonte Montgomery has chipped in 39, Cole VonHandorf has 33, Kenzie Melko has 30, and R.J. Hutcherson has 26.
Other Notable Rankings/Statistics
- Fairmont State currently ranks 28th in the country in scoring offense, averaging 86.1 points per game this season. West Liberty leads the country in scoring at 104.6 points per game this season.
- In addition to shooting nearly 40 percent from behind the arc, the Falcons currently rank 42nd in the country with a team field-goal percentage of 48.4 percent.
- Fairmont State also ranks 21st in the country and first in the MEC in turnovers per game, surrendering just 10.7 per outing.
- Fairmont State has four players shooting over 50 percent from the field this season, led by Andrew Emrick at 63.4 percent from the field. Vince Franklin (.625), Troy Cantrell (.544) and Kenzie Melko (.506) are also shooting over 50 percent from the field on the year.Â
Individual Leaders/Notes
Jason Jolly
- Jolly comes into Saturday's game with 1,541 career points, which ranks 29th in school history. Jolly is one of 30 players to score over 1,500 points in Fairmont State men's basketball history.
- Jolly went over 1,500 career points in last Wednesday's win over Glenville State.
- Jolly has shattered the school's all-time records for career 3-pointers (291) and 3-point field goal attempts (769). The previous school record for made 3-pointers was held by Thad McFadden (216).
- Jolly also ranks second in career free-throw percentage (.853), and seventh in career assists (368).
Vonte Montgomery
- Earlier this season (at WV Wesleyan, 12/1/18), Montgomery became the 49th player in Fairmont State men's basketball history to go over 1,000 career points. Montgomery enters Saturday's game with 1,233 career points, which ranks 38th in program history.
- Montgomery has reached double-figures in 17 of 19 games this season, including 20-or-more points in eight games this season. Montgomery also has six double-doubles on the season.
- Montgomery has scored 20-or-more points in five of the last six games.
Kenzie Melko-Marshall
- After reaching double-figures in just two of the first 11 games of the season, Kenzie Melko has reached double-figures in seven of the last eight games, including a career-high 25 points against Urbana.
- Melko is shooting over 50 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from behind the arc (30-of-69).
