The Matchup
- Fairmont State will host No. 16 ranked West Liberty on Sunday evening in a Mountain East Conference showdown at Dan Cava Court inside Joe Retton Arena.
- The game will be televised regionally on AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh, and fans can also stream the game on wvmetronews.com and mountaineast.tv.
- Fairmont State and West Liberty will meet for the 156th time on Sunday evening as the 20-5 Falcons host the nationally-ranked Hilltoppers.
- Fairmont State holds an 87-68 all-time series lead over the Hilltoppers, but have won just six of the previous 38 meetings dating back to 2004-05. Five of Fairmont State's six wins during that stretch came at Fairmont's Joe Retton Arena.
- The teams have split the regular season home-and-home in five of the last six seasons, with the home team winning each of the contests. WLU swept the regular season meetings during the 2015-16 season.
- Last season, Fairmont State defeated then eighth-ranked West Liberty, 106-104 at Joe Retton Arena, before dropping the last season rematch at the ASRC 96-85. In Fairmont's win over West Liberty on Dec. 9 in Fairmont,
Jason Jolly banked in an off-balanced jumper with just over a second remaining to give the Falcons the victory.
- In the first meeting of the season back on Jan. 15, West Liberty held off Fairmont State, 105-99, at the ASRC. Both teams shot over 50 percent from the field in the game, with West Liberty holding a 12-8 advantage in 3-pointers.
-
Kenzie Melko-Marshall scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Falcons, while
Isaiah Sanders chipped in 26 points.
- Pat Robinson finished the game with 23 points to lead West Liberty.
- Fairmont State, winners of six straight games, rallied to take down Wheeling University, 79-78, on Wednesday evening at the McDonough Center in Wheeling.
Isaiah Sanders drained a three with 19 seconds remaining to give the Falcons the lead for good in the victory.
-
Cole VonHandorf finished the evening with 18 points and six assists, while
Dale Bonner chipped in 18 points and three assists.
- West Liberty enters the game on a four-game winning streak and is coming off a 117-74 blowout victory over Frostburg State on Wednesday evening. The Hilltoppers have scored at least 111 points in each of the last three games.
- Fairmont State, who is 11-2 at home this season, will wrap up the regular season with three-consecutive home games.
- Three of West Liberty's four losses this season have come on the road.
Notables
- The Falcons are 11-2 at home this season, including a streak of eight in a row that dates back to Dec. 17, 2019.
- Two of the home victories include buzzer-beater wins over Urbana and West Virginia State.
Dale Bonner hit a buzzer-beater from midcourt against the Blue Knights on Jan. 8, while
Cole VonHandorf drained a three from the top of the key to down the Yellow Jackets on Jan. 29.
-
Kenzie Melko-Marshall (943) and
Cole VonHandorf (947) are both closing in on 1,000 points in their Fairmont State careers. If the duo were to reach 1,000 career points this season, they would be the 51st and 52nd players in program history.
- In addition, VonHandorf is just six 3-point field goals away from cracking the top 10 list in program history. Steve Custis is 10th in school history with 138.
- Fairmont State has four players averaging double-figures this season, including redshirt-freshman
Dale Bonner who is averaging 17.6 points per outing. Bonner is also first on the team in assists (135) and steals (59), and second on the team in rebounds (121).
- VonHandorf is also averaging 17.6 points per game this season. The junior is shooting 40 percent from behind the arc this season, and is also second on the team in both assists (77) and steals (46). VonHandorf has a team-high 56 three-pointers this season.
- Melko is third on the team in scoring (15.2), first on the team in rebounding (5.0) and is second on the team with 47 three-point field goals this season.
-
Isaiah Sanders is the fourth Falcon player to average double-figures this season at 13.4 points per game. Sanders has reached double-figures in 12 of the last 13 games for the Falcons, including five 20-point scoring performances. Sanders scored a career-high 30 points in Monday's non-conference win over Bluefield State.
