FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State men's basketball team is set to travel to California University of Pennsylvania for a contest tonight at 7:30 p.m. with the Vulcans. The Fighting Falcons enter the contest with a record of 2-0 after two wins in the Joe Retton Classic over the weekend. The Vulcans come into this evening's contest with three wins and zero losses.
Fairmont State was ranked fourth in the first installment of the D2SIDA Atlantic Poll this week with Indiana University of Pennsylvania taking the top spot and Cal (Pa.) slated seventh after wins over Mountain East Conference members the University of Charleston and Glenville State College.
Isaiah Sanders leads the Falcons into tonight's matchup averaging a double-double with 22.5 points per game and 10 rebounds per game.
Zyon Dobbs follows Sanders with 15 points per game and is a perfect 9-9 from the free-throw line.
Cole VonHandorf rounds out the Falcons in double figures in scoring with 10 points per game in 30.5 minutes per game.
The Falcons started their season on the right foot with an 89-55 victory over Edinboro on Saturday afternoon with Sanders picking up 22 points and Dobbs pouring in 17 points against the Fighting Scots. Fairmont State used a strong second half to pull away from Edinboro in the first game of the Joe Retton Classic.
Fairmont State used another solid second half of action to cruise past Salem in Sunday's 71-55 win with the Maroon and White shooting 19-20 from the charity stripe on the evening.
SCOUTING CAL (Pa.)
The Vulcans are coming in tonight's game with Fairmont State on a three-game win streak with their last game coming against Franklin Pierce University. Cal (Pa.) rolled past the Ravens by a final score of 104-84. The Vulcans also picked up wins against Charleston and Glenville State in the MEC/PSAC Tip-off Challenge this past weekend.
Cal (Pa.) averages 97.7 points per game as a team and are shooting 54.1% from the field (106-196) with 23 made three-pointers in three fixtures. The Vulcans allow their opponents to score the ball quite well with an average of 88.3 points per game and are 48% from the field in those three games.
Brent Pegram is the leading scorer for the Vulcans as he averages 26.7 points per game as the 5-11 guard has made 24 buckets with 14 coming from beyond the arc. Philip Alston joins Pegram as he is averaging 21.7 points per game and has a field goal percentage of 61.4% (27-44) on the season. Three more Vulcans are averaging in double-digits with Preston Boswell (15.3 ppg), Zyan Collins (14.0 ppg), and Keith Palek III (12.3 ppg).
Freshman Forward Bryson Lucas a Robert C. Byrd High School product is coming off a 15-point game against Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday night off 7-8 shooting from the field.
Head Coach Danny Sancomb is in his fourth season at the helm of the Cal (Pa.) men's basketball program with an overall record of 30-30. Sancomb coached at MEC member school Wheeling University for 11 years before taking over the coaching duties at Cal U (Pa.)
Fairmont State holds the 2-0 series lead over the Vulcans with the last meeting on November 9, 2018, when the Fighting Falcons grabbed the 86-70 victory inside Joe Retton Arena. VonHandorf led the Falcons in scoring with 18 points with six made field goals on the opening day of the Joe Retton Classic.
