WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State wrestling team competed at the 2021 Mountain East Conference Wrestling Championships on Saturday at West Liberty's ASRC. In the team results, Fairmont State placed seventh at the event with 22.0 total points.
 
Fairmont's performance at the championship was highlighted by a third-place finish from TJ Boyd at 285 (heavyweight). Boyd began the day by grabbing a 6-2 decision over Joshua Sanders of Davis & Elkins to advance to the semifinal round. In the semifinals, West Liberty's Francesco Borsellino edged Boyd by a 3-1 decision and went on to win the MEC individual championship in the weight class.
 
In the consolation bracket, Boyd defeated AB's Demetrius Daniels with a 3-2 decision and topped Mathew Dunkelman of Notre Dame in the third-place match with a 5-4 decision.
 
Riley Gallagher was the second-highest FSU wrestler to place at the championship event by taking fifth-place in the 197-pound weight class with a win over Bradden Galassi of Davis & Elkins. Fairmont's David Mundey placed sixth in the 165-pound weight class after defeating Notre Dame's Justin Crawford by major decision (10-2) to advance in the consolation bracket. Mundey dropped the fifth-place match to UNC Pembroke's Caleb Grau (Dec 3-2).
