CANTON, Ohio -- Seven top-10 finishes headlined the second day of the GMAC/MEC Swimming Championships for Fairmont State on Wednesday evening in Canton. The day was headlined by the fifth-place finish by
Ricard Castan in the 500 freestyle for Fairmont State.
The Falcons had three swimmers qualify for A-finals on Wednesday, with each coming in the 500 freestyle. On the men's side, Castan (4:45.91) turned in the top-five performance to earn third-team All-MEC honors in the event, while
Pedro Gaspar came in eighth place in the event with a time of 4:55.99.
Chris Hoover also qualified in B-final for the event, finishing 16
th with a time of 5:05.02.
On the women's side,
Zsofi Bevardi qualified for the lone A-final on Wednesday, finishing seventh in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:14.70.
In the second individual event of the day, Fairmont State had two men's swimmers qualify for the B-final in the 200 IM.
Tyler Virtue won the B-final race and finished ninth in the event with a time of 1:57.89. He also garnered third team All-MEC honors with his performance.
Majester Abdul-Jalil finished 13
th in the event with a time of 2:00.54, while
Kyle Carson swam in the C-final and finished 23
rd with a time of 2:06.97.
In the women's 200 IM,
Alexis Antol and
Kayla Fogle each qualified for the C-final. Antol placed 19
th in the event with a time of 2:18.93, and
Kayla Fogle came in 21
st place with a time of 2:21.64.
In the third individual event of the day, Fairmont State's
Nathan Fubio won the B-final of the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.54. His teammate
Devan Wilson also qualified for the C-final in the event and placed 24
th with a time of 22.94. In the women's 50 freestyle,
Sarah Stallman qualified for the C-final and finished 21
st with a time of 26.21.
Fairmont State also competed in the 400 Medley Relay on Wednesday evening. The Falcon men placed fifth in the event with a time of 3:31.17 to earn third-team All-MEC accolades in the event. The FSU women took ninth in the relay with a time of 4:16.63.
After two days of competition, UNC Pembroke leads all MEC programs and is in third on the women's side with 374 points at the GMAC/MEC Championships. Hillsdale leads the meet with 633 points, and Findlay is second with 510.5 points. Fairmont State is currently in eighth place with 197 points.
On the men's side, Findlay leads the way with 595.5 points. Notre Dame is in second with 357 points, just ahead of Fairmont State's two-day total of 345 points.
